Think of something that happened to you today and write down the first thing that comes to mind. Start your fanwork with your character having a similar experience or performing a similar task.

Seems this happens every year lol I disappear for months and reappear with fanart in March. But even if I'm busy (and starting my last year as a PhD student it's gonna get worse) or caught up in another fandom, Tolkien still has the #1 spot in my heart and I will make time to participate.

This year I will work less on each pic to get more done. That means they won't be the best I can do but I'll try my best (and this will be good practice too!). My original idea was to only work on four prompts from the generator before March, but life got in the way. So I'll be working on them and maybe post them at the end of the event, kind of like a grand finale (I'm hoping they'll be of better quality than the daily prompts).

So head's up, I will be posting more in one month than I did last year XD

This would be the third time I'm redrawing Emlinn from Himring's The West Wind Quartet. It's interesting to see how my style changes over time. And the new one is very sketchy... it was done on impulse, to see how it'd turn out.

I also want to take a moment to congratulate Himring on creating a character and a story that has stayed with me through all these years. I checked the review I left and I can't believe it's from 2010. Almost 10 years! And I still remember it. Well done, Himring!!

Starting a two weeks course in another city this monday, I needed something to read for the 8h bus ride. Such a lovely story! 10/10 would recommend.

IT TAKES A GRAVEYARD TO RAISE A CHILD.

Nobody Owens, known as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the dead. There are adventures in the graveyard for a boy--an ancient Indigo Man, a gateway to the abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man Jack--who has already killed Bod's family.

This started as a redraw of a Tuor pic I did in 2010 (almost 10 years ago!!!), but halfway it became Beren. It felt too rough to be Tuor. Found the sketch yesterday while working on the Elrond&Elros pic and decided why not finish this? I really need to stop doing this so late at night though -_-

And it seemed to Thingol that this Man was unlike all other mortal Men, and among the great in Arda

In which Elros is Not Impressed by Elven-kind and Elrond is trying to pretend he's not comparing everyone in a position of authority to Maedhros and finds them lacking.

Elrond&Elros - Feanorian silences.jpg

Ereinion clearly thinks that it was a terrible thing to happen to us, to be fostered by Maglor, and maybe he’s right. But I think he imagines that there are dark hurtful secrets in our past that we aren’t revealing, obscure Feanorian transgressions.  There are no sinister Feanorian secrets, though. All Maedhros and Maglor’s crimes are public knowledge. We are merely replicating Feanorian silences.

The language of flowers - Elderflower: Compassion
Elements of Elrond - Friend
Art - In your favourite artists' style, Digital art
Four words - Bloom, Devour, Blinding, Alliance
Notes: used Hiromu Arakawa's style (Fullmetal Alchemit's mangaka)

For Maglor took pity upon Elros and Elrond, and he cherished them, and love grew after between them, as little might be thought

Draw a Tolkien character - dancing
The language of flowers - Iris: Good News; Thistle: Nobility
Elements of Elrond - Husband; Host; Diplomant; Peredhil
Art - fashion study

Notes: I used Frankish Merovingian as reference for Elrond's outfit and Ancient Greek for Celebrían's. Also I headcanon that 1) Celebrían is taller than Elrond and 2) Elrond does feel the cold more than full-blooded elves.

Often Beleg Strongbow came to Menegroth to seek him, and led him far afield, teaching him woodcraft and archery and (which he liked more) the handling of swords; but in crafts of making he had less skill, for he was slow to learn his own strength, and often marred what he made with some sudden stroke.

Inspired by Drag0nst0rm's amazing fic Softly Sing the Children

Morendo: Dying.

Tranquillo: Calmly, peacefully.

Softly sing the children - Maia Twins.png

"The servants of Celegorm find Elured and Elurin, and they abandon them in the woods. This is a decision they do not regret until Maedhros discovers it and gives brutal justice.

They are not sure if they would have done it had the children been … different. They think that they might have at least hesitated more.

As it is, the children’s uncanny stares and the disinterested look they had given to their fallen nurse and the blood that had splattered their clothes had made them very glad to leave them behind."

The sound of running and falling water was loud, and the evening was filled with a faint scent of trees and flowers, as if summer still lingered in Elrond's gardens. (Fellowship of the Ring, “Many Meetings”)

Arrow River, one of the locations used for the Ford of Bruinen scene (Black Rider's side of the river, the side with Arwen and Frodo was filmed at another location). We didn't have a guide here, and even though there was a map showing all the hiking tracks and the place where the scene was filmed, there was no mark on the location. Walking around, we got to the place that looked familiar to all of us.

Create a fanwork that includes an animal that lives in or near the water (fish, whale, seabird, or whatever you like)

I have so many photos that would fit the prompt but unfortunately none that's also LOTR related. Most of them were taken in between locations, or during my first and lasts days in NZ. However I managed to find those little guys lurking in the back of this pic :D

Duck and ducklings enjoying a swim in The Water

This was taking during my first time in Hobbiton (third day in NZ, second day of the tour, and the first location we visited). If anyone is about to go there, or is planning to, I defenitely recomend to do the Evening Tour. Seeing the sunset in Hobbiton is a magical experience, and with only two groups, there's a ton of opportinities to take photos without people in the background :) Then of course there's the Hobbit style banquet! Can't imagine a better first bonding experience as a fellowhip.

Then Aragorn took the crown and held it up and said:

Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn’ Ambar-metta!

And those were the words that Elendil spoke when he came up out of the Sea on the wings of the wind: ‘Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.’ (The Return of the King, “The Steward and the King”)

New Zealand is a beautiful country, but every once in a while we got to a location that I loved so much it made me want to set camp to live there forever. Most of those locations were in the South Island... the nature there was wilder, I thought, compared to the North Island. This particular location was in Mavora Lakes, and it's used as part of the Anduin when the Fellowship leaves Lórien.

Then he glimmering passed to the starless vast
As an isled lamp at sea,
And beyond the ken of mortal men
Set his lonely errantry,
Tracking the Sun in his galleon
Through the pathless firmament,
Till his light grew old in abysses cold
And his eager flame was spent

And the music and the echo of the music went out into the Void, and it was not void. Never since have the Ainur made any music like to this music, though it has been said that a greater still shall be made before Ilúvatar by the choirs of the Ainur and the Children of Ilúvatar after the end of days. (The Silmarillion, “Ainulindale”)

The Ainur aren't the only ones who can create something amazing...

We met Daniel Reeve, who did all the calligraphy and cartography we can see on the movies (and a lot things we never got to see). He gave us a presentation, and I can tell you, the amount of work he did for the movies is insane. He demonstrated his calligraphy skills and then it was comission time! What I had him write for me was the best thing I got from the trip. After the meeting was over it was the first and only time I called my mom lol I was so excited I needed to share it with someone, I didn't care it was almost 3am back home :P

The original draft for Bilbo's contract vs the end result. Peter Jackson wanted it to be longer and longer each time. It takes about a week to write one, if I remember correctly.

Here he's working on my request. The open book over there was writen for the movie with parts of stories taken from the Silmarillion. It's open on the entry about Túrin Turambar, because I had told him how much I loved that story, among all of Tolkien's work, so he went and looked for that part. Not only is he super talented, he was also a really nice guy.

Since I don’t have the skills or the time to participate as much as I’d like when we get daily prompts for B2MeM, I decided to do something different. While I’ll still try to create as much fanart as I can, I figured another way to participate more often this year. I’ll share some photos of my trip to New Zealand (!!!) last December. It might be stretching the rules a bit (or a lot), but it’s related to Tolkien and photography is a form of art, right? ;-)

The wind began to blow steadily out of the West and pour the water of the distant seas on the dark heads of the hills in fine drenching rain. (Fellowship of the Ring, “Flight to the Ford”)

100_0551.JPG

Edoras location. We were in the middle of a nice picnic lunch at the top of Mt Sunday when we saw those clouds in the distance moving our way. We hurried back to the bus and were able to beat the rain (just in time!).

I was so close to finishing on time! But some real life drama got in the way.
Still, this is the first time Imanaged to complete all the prompts \o/
See you all next year!

[B2MeM17] Winged Terror.png

the Orange Path (Character Study or Ship Manifesto )

“The people of Hador were of great strength and stature, ready in mind, bold and steadfast, quick to anger and to laughter, mighty among the Children of Ilúvatar in the youth of Mankind. Yellow-haired they were for the most part, and blue-eyed”

“The Men of the House of Bëor were dark or brown of hair, with grey eyes; and of all Men they were most like to the Noldor and most loved by them; for they were eager of mind, cunning-handed, swift in understanding, long in memory, and they were moved sooner to pity than to laughter”

[B2MeM17] Morwen&Húrin - Opposites.png

Húrin was fair of face and golden-haired, strong in body and fiery of mood. But the fire in him burned steadily, and he had great endurance of will. Morwen was dark-haired and tall, and for the light of her glance and the beauty of her face men called her Eledhwen, the Elven-fair; but she was somewhat stern of mood and proud. The sorrows of the House of Bëor saddened her heart.
