Think of something that happened to you today and write down the first thing that comes to mind. Start your fanwork with your character having a similar experience or performing a similar task.

This started as a redraw of a Tuor pic I did in 2010 (almost 10 years ago!!!), but halfway it became Beren. It felt too rough to be Tuor. Found the sketch yesterday while working on the Elrond&Elros pic and decided why not finish this? I really need to stop doing this so late at night though -_-

And it seemed to Thingol that this Man was unlike all other mortal Men, and among the great in Arda

Draw a Tolkien character - in love
The language of flowers - Balsamine: Impatience

Often Beleg Strongbow came to Menegroth to seek him, and led him far afield, teaching him woodcraft and archery and (which he liked more) the handling of swords; but in crafts of making he had less skill, for he was slow to learn his own strength, and often marred what he made with some sudden stroke.

the Orange Path (Character Study or Ship Manifesto )

“The people of Hador were of great strength and stature, ready in mind, bold and steadfast, quick to anger and to laughter, mighty among the Children of Ilúvatar in the youth of Mankind. Yellow-haired they were for the most part, and blue-eyed”

“The Men of the House of Bëor were dark or brown of hair, with grey eyes; and of all Men they were most like to the Noldor and most loved by them; for they were eager of mind, cunning-handed, swift in understanding, long in memory, and they were moved sooner to pity than to laughter”

[B2MeM17] Morwen&Húrin - Opposites.png

Húrin was fair of face and golden-haired, strong in body and fiery of mood. But the fire in him burned steadily, and he had great endurance of will. Morwen was dark-haired and tall, and for the light of her glance and the beauty of her face men called her Eledhwen, the Elven-fair; but she was somewhat stern of mood and proud. The sorrows of the House of Bëor saddened her heart.

Something that really caught my attention is how little the Valar seem to involve themselves when it comes to Men. The only Power they were exposed to at the beginning was Morgoth, and while that was true of the Elves, at least the Valar did something about it when they found out. When Men appeared? No help would come from them until someone pleaded for the First and Second born... That’s incredibly unfair. The exiled Noldor screwed up, and then both Men and the Elves who never went to Valinor had to pay too?

Maybe the Valar were afraid of screwing up like they did with the Noldor. Maybe being around Men would be too much for Men’s bodies, like being in Valinor would be too much for them. Maybe they just decided to stay back because they don’t understand Men at all. In any case, it’s unfair suggest falling victim to Morgoth’s influence is Men’s fault, when the Valar stayed back and let that happen.

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Loss of InnocenceLoss of Innocence

"Then Glaurung died, and the veil of his malice was taken from her, and she remembered all the days of her life. Looking down upon Túrin she cried: 'Farewell, O twice beloved! A Túrin Turambar turun ambartanen: master of doom by doom mastered! O happy to be dead!' Then Brandir who had heard all, standing stricken upon the edge of ruin, hastened towards her; but she ran from him distraught with horror and anguish, and coming to the brink of Cabed-en-Aras she cast herself over, and was lost in the wild water."

Farewell, O twice beloved!

Turin, not very happy at being in Doriath without his family.

Aside from the fact that I find it incredibly hard to draw men (and it’ll take a long time before I manage to do it right), there were two problems I had to face when I started drawing:

1) Tuor’s hair colour: I assumed he was dark headed. That is, until I remembered he belonged to the House of Hador, and yes, in UT it’s said that he was golden-haired after the manner of his father’s kin. If only I had looked that up sooner… [Just checked The Silmarillion, apparently the only member of the House of Hador with dark hair was Túrin. Guess I’m too used to the Númenóreans]

2) Beards and First Age Men’s hairstyles: I don’t think there’s any mention of the Men’s appearance other than their hair and eye colour, when they are mentioned. Given that Tuor lived among elves for most of his life, I figured he’d adopt their style: no beard (though I guess he had one when he arrived at Gondolin) and long hair, but not as long as the Elves’. I picture him as someone simple, so I don’t see him wearing any fancy circlet upon his head, unless it was a very special occasion, nor wearing intricate braids.
