Inspired by this part of the Song of Beren and Lúthien:

Tinúviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her raiment glimmering.

Aside from the fact that I find it incredibly hard to draw men (and it’ll take a long time before I manage to do it right), there were two problems I had to face when I started drawing:

1) Tuor’s hair colour: I assumed he was dark headed. That is, until I remembered he belonged to the House of Hador, and yes, in UT it’s said that he was golden-haired after the manner of his father’s kin. If only I had looked that up sooner… [Just checked The Silmarillion, apparently the only member of the House of Hador with dark hair was Túrin. Guess I’m too used to the Númenóreans]

2) Beards and First Age Men’s hairstyles: I don’t think there’s any mention of the Men’s appearance other than their hair and eye colour, when they are mentioned. Given that Tuor lived among elves for most of his life, I figured he’d adopt their style: no beard (though I guess he had one when he arrived at Gondolin) and long hair, but not as long as the Elves’. I picture him as someone simple, so I don’t see him wearing any fancy circlet upon his head, unless it was a very special occasion, nor wearing intricate braids.

I don’t know where this image of Turgon and Finrod building a sandcastle in Alqualondë came from, but I couldn’t get it out of my head.

It even has a back-story: Findaráto went with his family to visit grandfather Olwë, but not before he could talk his father and uncle Nolofinwë into letting Turko go with them.

Turin, not very happy at being in Doriath without his family.

This was based on Himring's story Down. Out. Up, part of her Doom, Gloom and Maedhros series. Needless to say I highly recommend reading it! :)

Comments on the drawing process:

I need to think of all the details when drawing, so when it came to the clothes I had to come up with something. I figured those clothes hadn’t been picked by Maedhros because he wouldn’t care less about it. I also thought that if he had chosen something himself, it’d be similar in style to what he used to wear in Himring. I believe newly re-embodied elves would fall back to familiar things and that Maedhros, in particular, would wear what Maedhros used to wear, not what Maitimo wore before everything went to hell. I went and searched for ancient clothing styles, among them Norse and Russian (Himring was cold). What Maedhros is wearing is based on something I found, only he would have used a long fur lined cloak back then. That’d be too hot for the climate in Valinor, though.

I had to think about the formality too. Himring described a fairly cosy scene so nothing too formal. At the same time, they are still elves, and they are still Noldorin princes. Something too plain wouldn’t have worked.
